Participation in 2011 PEER Annual Meeting

Anil Lab, Dept. of Civil Eng. D2@Deepak R. Pant

This was my second time participating in a PEER Annual Meeting. The exciting part of the meeting this year again was the Young Researcher Session (YRS) organized one day before the main event, where more than 30 graduate students from renowned US universities, Tongji University of China, and Tokyo Tech shared their research findings and discussed future directions. As a part of networking, I was also able to make some new friends which are still in contact with me. This year’s YRS was special as it featured visit to production plant of Earthquake Protection Systems, Inc, where we observed manufacturing of friction pendulum bearings and their real-time testing. The main event featured oral presentations by professors and practitioners involved in PEER-funded projects as well as poster presentations by young researchers. The presentations were valuable to understand the state of the art research and to determine future directions in the area of earthquake engineering research for the creation of an earthquake-resilient society. Despite of our tight schedule, we were also able to manage a double-decker bus tour of San Francisco city. Stunning view of the city from the bay and a walk over Golden Gate Bridge is memorable. Finally, I would like to thank CUEE at Tokyo Tech and PEER Center at UC Berkeley for funding this trip.
