2009年10月17日，Loma Prieta Earthquake Commemorative Symposiumが米国サンフランシスコで開催されました．本シンポジウムは，1989年に米国カリフォルニア州北部で発生，大災害をもたらしたロマ・プリエタ地震を記念したもので，その開催日は地震発生からちょうど20年目に当たります．東工大CUEEからは，助教3名，博士研究員1名，博士課程学生3名の計7名が参加しました．写真-1は，会場入り口の様子です．
シンポジウムは，カリフォルニア大学バークレー校教授で太平洋地震工学センター長を務めるStephen Mahin氏の開会挨拶で始まりました（写真-2）．下表に，シンポジウムの講演プログラムを示します．表に示しますように，講演者の所属は，米国各地の大学，公共機関，研究所，企業など多岐に渡り，ロマ・プリエタ地震に関する話題が様々な視点から提供されました．すべての話題はもちろん，ロマ・プリエタ地震に関連しておりましたが，兵庫県南部地震（1995年，日本）やChi-Chi地震（1999年，台湾）等，諸外国の震災状況と併せて論議されている話題が多く，地域特性との関連が扱われていたことに大変興味を惹かれました．
シンポジウムの開催場所であるMark Hopkinsホテルからケーブルカーに乗り足を延ばすと，サンフランシスコ湾を望むことができます．そこで見たゴールデンゲート橋は大変荘厳で美しく，先人の技術者が構造物に懸ける思いに感動いたしました．
最後になりましたが，このような貴重な経験をする機会を与えてくださったCUEE関係者の皆様に，ここに記して感謝申し上げます．
