10th CUEE Conference
It is a signal pleasure to extend an invitation to our 10th International Conference on Urban Earthquake Engineering (10CUEE) to be held in Tokyo on March 1st and 2nd, 2013. The conference has been convened every March since 2004, under two consecutive five-year Center-of-Excellence (COE) programs headquartered at the Center for Urban Earthquake Engineering (CUEE) here at Tokyo Tech. Our current Global-COE program (August, 2008- March, 2013) is entitled International Urban Earthquake Engineering Center for Mitigating Seismic Mega Risk. We have aimed not only to promote research to mitigate the seismic “mega” risk confronting vast, modern cities in earthquake regions throughout the world, but also to produce next-generation practitioners and researchers responsible for developing new strategies and practices for seismic risk reduction. As 2013 is the final year of our second five-year program, this will be the last, but it is hoped not least, of the conferences held under this particular title. We are confident that our March 2013 event will once again help stimulate intensive information dissemination and technology transfer, as well as promote and uphold the now well-established and robust international network of younger researchers who have demonstrated their internationally sustained collaborative effort.
The Tenth Conference as always offers a platform not only to share common interests and new information and technologies in the field of Urban Earthquake Engineering but also to disseminate our research and educational outcomes and to implement a strengthened worldwide network for Earthquake Engineering. The Conference will feature state-of-the-art technical presentations on various topics relevant to Urban Earthquake Engineering, followed by thematic presentations in parallel sessions, on the part of scientists, engineers, researchers, and planners of divers generations, including both younger researchers as well as graduate students. A special session is designated to commemorate the second anniversary of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake that resulted in extensive and catastrophic damage in coastal northeast Japan two years ago and a death toll of some 20,000. We shall also endeavor to summarize and put into perspective the legacy of our five-year G-COE program.
As in previous years the 10CUEE is slated to include Special Educational Sessions and Best Presentation Awards for Young Researchers. To facilitate conference participation of young researchers, Post Doctoral Fellows and PhD students, travel grants will be available for a maximum of forty individuals: namely, PhD students, early-career academics, and early-career professionals studying or working at our collaborating institutions. Our hope is that the upcoming conference will offer a unique opportunity for all of us dedicated to Urban Earthquake Engineering.
