Research Theme & Topics

  1. Promotion of Advanced Urban Earthquake Engineering Research for Reducing Seismic Mega Risk
The following three categories of research activities will be strongly promoted for resolving various issues to reduce "Seismic Mega Risk" and transferring the outcomes to society.

Research Area 1: Innovation Technology for Earthquake Disaster Mitigation:
Advanced technologies for precise seismic and Tsunami hazard simulations, high-performance seismic response reduction, high-performance composite design of foundation and upper structures and remote-sensing earthquake damage information system will be developed for practical applications.

Research Area 2: Renovation Technology for Urban Earthquake Resilience:
Technologies for seismic evaluation, retrofit and reinforcement of existing buildings, reinforcement for underground infrastructures, seismic improvements for nonstructural components and interiors, emergency traffic flow control during seismic events, regional evacuation planning and universal design considering handicapped citizens will be promoted for practical applications.

Research Area 3: Management Technology of Urban Disaster Mitigation:
Overall strategic researches and developments for seismic performance improvement for urban complexes considering social and business risks, effective temporary accommodation system for the public after the earthquake, education for disaster consciousness, performance based design strategies for business continuity plan (BCP) and strategies for social community restoration will be transferred to public.

  2. Establishment of International Center of Excellence
    1. With the core relationship with the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center (PEER), CUEE will reinforce the relationships with leading educational and research centers in North and South America, Asia, Europe and Japan for strong promotion of collaborative research and developments.
    2. With annual international conferences and workshops organized by young researchers, as well as publication of English textbooks containing the results of the R&D activities of this G-COE program, the end products will be released and transferred to public, and networks of researchers will be established.
    3. World-Class laboratories for earthquake engineering will be introduced for enhancing the education and research qualities. These laboratories will be also used for international collaboration and exchange programs for young researchers.
    4. The end products of research and education will be disseminated to the public through the internet and open seminars, making CUEE as one of the key research network hubs connecting international institutions in Asian and the western countries as well as those within Japan.
