Poster Presentation and Awards - 6th International Conference on Urban Earthquake Engineering
For the first time, CUEE offered a “Best Poster Presentation Award for Young Researchers” with results assessed by a closed committee of senior researchers. The two Poster Sessions (Photos 1 to 3) on 3rd and 4th March at the Sixth International Conference on Urban Earthquake Engineering comprised a total of 36 presentations, followed on both days by lively discussions. Four young researchers were selected as the final winners (Photo 4). Their names are listed below, each followed by a brief comment by the Poster Award recipient.
Mr. Shuhei Shibayama (Department of Civil Engineering, Tokyo Tech)
“It is an honor to be selected a winner of the ‘Best Poster Presentation Award for Young Researchers.’ I am indebted to my two postgraduate supervisors, Professor Kusakabe and Associate Professor Takahashi at Tokyo Tech, as well as to all the members of our laboratory. This award will encourage me to pursue my future research with even greater zeal. Thank you very much.”
Ms. Yuko Shimada (Department of Environmental Science and Technology, Tokyo Tech)
“I feel honored to be a recipient of this year’s ‘Best Poster Presentation Award for Young Researchers.’ In fact, I have not participated in many such presentations but simply prepared the poster using graphics designed for easy understanding, while trying hard to make the topic as comprehensible as possible. I think this may have earned me the award. The prize, which is the first of my career, is sure to stimulate my further research.”
Mr. Patrick Wilson (Department of Structural Engineering, UCSD)
“I am extremely grateful for the opportunity I had to attend the Sixth CUEE Conference and the Young Researcher’s Workshop in Tokyo, as well as for having received this award for my poster presentation. Throughout our fantastic experience, I was impressed not only by the excellence of the research presented, but also by the very generous hospitality of our most gracious Japanese hosts. I would like to acknowledge sponsorship from both CUEE and PEER, and also the excellent guidance of my advisor, Professor of Geotechnical Engineering Ahmed Elgamal.”
Ms. Barbara Chang (Department of Structural Engineering, UCSD)
“Thank you for presenting me with one of the awards for ‘Best Poster’. I was very pleased to be chosen, as there were so many other excellent posters on display. I also thank the conference organizers and their staff, who proved extremely good hosts to us visiting students. I very much enjoyed both participating in the conference and visiting Japan.”
